BP is funding a 2.5 million, five-year project on integrated, low-energy building design for Cambridge-MIT Institute (CMI) as part of CMI’s initiative to help increase productivity and competitiveness in industry-university relationships in the UK. BP’s project choice reflects the company’s belief that integrating innovative, energy-efficient technologies into building design will help to minimize the emissions of greenhouse gases and create a comfortable and healthy environment in buildings.
The UK government-sponsored initiative brings together experts in architectural design, building engineering, natural ventilation processes, and building environmental safety. Through a combination of complementary fundamental research and a joint design project for a specific building, the project’s goal is to build the foundations of a new discipline of integrated, low-energy building design. BP’s grant of 23 million established the BP Institute at Cambridge in 1999.
