The Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) has signaled its intent to launch a test case seeking new rights for Australia’s two million casual employees. This follows a late December decision that gives casual workers employed under the metal industry award the right to convert to permanent employment after six months of service.
ACTUs case will:
- seek to boost the loading on hourly wage rates paid to casual employees to compensate them for lack of permanency and leave entitlements;
- create rights for all casuals to convert to permanent employment after a specified period of continuous service with an employer; and
- extend other entitlements to casuals.
