UK FMs expect to pay thousands in accessibility compliance costs

October 15, 2001—A recent survey conducted by CMS Cameron McKenna and reported by workplacelaw.net says that UK facilities managers expect to pay around 2,000 to make all the necessary changes under the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) that will take effect in October 2004.

The DDA, passed in 1995, requires FMS to make “reasonable adjustments” to their facilities to enable access for disabled people. Physical features that might need adjusting include fixtures, fittings, furnishings, and furniture. Other adjustments might include adding Braille signs, modifying instruction or reference manuals, or reallocating part of a person’s job to someone else.

For more information, contact the UK Department for Work and Pensions Disability Unit. A print version of the DDA Code of Practice is available by sending a written request to The Stationery Office, PO Box 276, London SW8 5DT, or by calling 0870 600 5522.
