February 1, 2002—Gilbert Architects, a Lancaster, Pa.-based building design firm that specializes in public schools, recently won the 2001 Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence for its energy-efficient design of Radnor Township School District’s new Radnor Elementary School in Delaware County, Pa. The school is the first newly constructed “green” educational facility in Pennsylvania. It incorporates numerous elements of environmentally friendly green design that resulted in both environmental and financial benefits. Included among those design elements was the extensive use of recycled construction materials; low-cost, energy-efficient geothermal heating, cooling, and lighting systems; optimal use of natural light; and energy reducing low “E” double-pane glass. In addition, the award cited the project for wildlife preservation (more than 100 mature trees were saved) as well as its construction-waste recycling methods.
