DOE energy-efficient lighting course now online

September 30, 2002—Updated for 2002, the Department of Energy’s Office of Federal Energy Management Programs (FEMP) is offering its lighting efficiency training course over the Internet, as a Web-based distance learning class. FEMP says it has received rave reviews for both convenience and high quality content. Course materials for “Energy Effective Lighting: Managing Lighting Retrofits for Energy Savings and Productivity” can be downloaded from the class Web site at work, at home, or anywhere with Internet access. Course materials are reviewed at the student’s convenience over the nine sections. The instructors and students communicate online.

The class is tailored to the needs of federal energy managers who supervise lighting projects, or who want to learn more about the essentials of lighting efficiency. The curriculum features information on the latest technology and the current lighting codes. It addresses workplace lighting, including offices, institutional, industrial, and warehouse spaces.

Registration period for the course is open from August 26, 2002 to September 23, 2002. Completion of the course offers 3 college credits through Edmonds Community College and 36 credits for NCQLP re-accreditation. The fee for the course is $37. The Web-based Advanced Lighting Guidelines 2001 is used as the class text.

FEMP is also offering its successful Advanced Lighting Workshop on October 21-23, 2002 at the Florida Solar Energy Center in Orlando, Florida. The three-day training course, taught by renowned lighting expert Nancy Clanton, PE, LC, provides a hands-on professional development class for those who want more experience with advanced lighting techniques. The course fee is $195.00 and includes the CD-ROM of the IESNA 2000 Handbook. Scholarships are available for federal government employees. The workshop provides 15 LEUs for NCQLP re-certification.
