December 13, 2002—The US General Services Administration (GSA) recently launched a Web site listing companies that haul construction waste, the first step toward recycling it. The database was designed as a tool for contractors who expressed the desire to recycle construction waste but needed to find someone to haul it.
According to the GSA Public Buildings Service (PBS), some estimates indicate that concrete, asphalt, drywall, and other non-biodegradable debris comprises up to half of what is buried in landfills. GSA’s expectation is that the information provided will help reduce the number of landfills.
GSA’s database, which includes almost 2,000 companies nationwide, is reportedly the first to include an all-in-one list of construction waste recyclers. It includes company names and contact information, along with the materials that haulers accept and their sorting criteria. It is searchable via city, state, and other key words.
