USPS aims to announce new mailbox standard for office facilities

August 15, 2003—In late July, the US Postal Service met to discuss a negotiated rulemaking regarding the size and security of the wall-mounted mailboxes commonly used in apartment and office facilities. USPS hopes to promulgate a new standard for a larger mailbox that will be more secure and help to reduce mail and identity theft, according to BOMA International, which the office building industry on the rulemaking committee.

BOMA and the other real estate groups have taken a firm position against any retrofit requirements. However, they acknowledge that larger mailboxes will likely be required for both new construction and buildings undergoing a substantial renovation. Details and implementation deadlines have not yet been agreed to.

The proposed rulemaking is scheduled to be released by the end of 2003.
