Ontario government establishes ergonomics panel to cut workplace injuries

March 18, 2005—The Ontario government is setting up an ergonomics advisory group to recommend ways to protect workers as part of its plan to reduce workplace injuries by 20 per cent by 2008, the government says.

According to the Ministry of Labour, there were more than 40,000 musculoskeletal injuries to workers in 2003, accounting for more than 40 per cent of all workplace lost-time injuries. The panel will examine best practices, policies, and enforcement options for addressing this serious cause of injury and will report back to the minister within seven months with recommendations on strategies to reduce ergonomic injuries. The focus will be on Ontarios manufacturing sector, which includes industrial, automotive, retail and restaurant businesses.
