NeoCon’05: LED Halley lamp by Lucesco wins Gold award; design incorporates counterbalances

June 20, 2005—Designed by Richard Sapper for Lucesco Lighting, Inc., the Halley lamp has a fluidity of motion achieved by a counterbalancing scheme that involves its three arms for full range of freedom, notes the company.

The counterbalances are distributed along three arm joints, with complete vertical and horizontal motion. The joints, assures Lucesco, are specially designed with a subtle friction mechanism that won’t wear out. The result, described by Lucesco, is a thin, light head that floats where the user puts it. No need to step back and figure out how to get the head where you want it. No need to tighten screws or fiddle with springs.

Counterweights are cast iron, arms are aluminum, and a zinc base provides the mass needed to ensure stability. The head is mainly aluminum with plastic covers and a “sophisticated” cooling system. A bulb of 20 watts of warm white LED power produces about the equivalent of light output of a 35-watt halogen bulb. The Halley family consists of floor lamp, desk lamp, and a compact version.
