July 6, 2005—The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is set to adopt a standard for the installation of electronic security systems, after NFPA Standards 730 and 731 were approved during the NFPA World Safety Conference and Expo in June, says the association.
Technical committees passed the two standards—NFPA 730, “Guide for Premises Security;” and 731, “Standard for the Installation of Electronic Premise Security Systems”—but will still need to vote on and approve some minor amendments and revisions at an Aug. 18 meeting, the association says.
NFPA 731 officially covers the application, location, installation, performance, testing and maintenance of physical security systems and their components. While the National Burglar and Fire Alarm Association has publicly opposed the standard, several other industry associations, including the Security Industry Association have given the standard their support.
According to NFPA, the new standards will likely be available in September. Visit the NFPA Web site for more information.
