December 5, 2005—The International Facility Management (IFMA) Foundation has released a primer on wireless technologies, which have become an integral part of the workplace environment. IFMA notes that while most technical detail is the responsibility of an organization’s IT department, this is considered a major area of competency for facilities managers, and a substantive knowledge of how wireless systems interact within a facility is essential.
“Wireless Systems in the Facility” provides an overview of wireless technologies (including PDAs, Bluetooth, LANs, Ethernets, mobile phones, and much more) relating to audio, video, e-mail, the Internet, data, construction, design, and furnishings. Other considerations are also addressed, including lifecycle costs, security issues, and health effects.
Baker Robbins & Company, a full-service, independent technology consulting company, produced the study and accompanying white paper. The study was funded by the IFMA Foundation Corporate Circle of Contributors, which includes Allsteel, Antron, Milliken, and Steelcase.
