UK government grantees will install micropower technologies

January 10, 2007—The next step in the British Government’s drive to increase microgeneration began in December with the opening of Phase 2 of the Department of Trade and Industry’s (DTI) Low Carbon Buildings Programme (LCBP), which will be administered by the Building Research Establishment (BRE) consultancy.

The second phase will provide 50 million in grants over the next 18 months to help fund the installation of micropower technologies such as solar panels, micro wind-turbines, and ground source heat pumps on schools and not-for-profit and public sector buildings.

Any excess electricity produced by these technologies will reportedly be sold back to the National Grid. DTI notes that the scrapping of income tax on re-sales will be an incentive to increase local-level energy production.

More information and grant applications are available from the Phase 2 Web site.
