April 16, 2007—Colorado Governor Bill Ritter signed two bills recently that are designed to significantly boost the use of renewable energy within the state.
House Bill 1281 (.pdf file) doubles the state’s renewable energy portfolio standard, requiring investor-owned utilities to draw on renewable energy for 20 percent of their electricity supply by 2020. By the same deadline, rural electric cooperatives are required to draw on renewable energy for 10 percent of their electricity.
Senate Bill 100 (.pdf file) encourages the construction of new transmission lines to enable greater use of renewable energy.
