Aeron, Eames Lounge Chairs make list of century’s top product designs

August 19, 2002—Fast Company magazine’s June 2002 issue hails Herman Miller’s Aeron chair and Eames Lounge chair as among the 15 best-designed consumer products of the past 100 years. Authors of the list, Craig Vogel and Jonathan Cagan, based their choices on products “that have been designed with thoughtful, integrated style and technology.”

Additionally, the products chosen had to be affordable, accessible, and something that “significantly affected” a person’s lifestyle. The two Herman Miller chairs are the only furniture products to appear on the list. Other products featured include the Swiss Army Knife, the Palm Pilot, and the Model T. The authors acknowledge the Eames Lounge chair, designed by Charles and Ray Eames, “because of its integration of aesthetics, ergonomics, and manufacturing and its role as the prototype of the modern chair.” The Aeron chair, designed by Bill Stumpf and Don Chadwick, gets the nod for its “redefined aesthetics and ergonomics for the postmodern era.”
