January 23, 2004—TRC, a provider of technical, financial, risk management, and construction services, announced that its Energy Services Group has been retained by the US Department of Defense to work with Dominion Virginia Power to design and build an “intelligent building” system that conserves and optimizes energy use at the Pentagon. Once commissioned, the system will monitor environmental conditions inside the Pentagon, and handle threat detection, containment, emergency response operations, and energy management functions through a single architecture.
TRC’s two initial activities included design, engineering, and construction services to develop the Pentagon’s Solar Energy Farm. The Solar Energy Farm consists of two renewable solar technology systems, a photo-voltaic system that produces more than 110 kilowatts of renewable electricity, and a 75.6-kilowatt solar hot water system that supplements domestic hot water requirements.
TRC also is involved in the design, engineering, and installation of a full-function digital control system at the Pentagon’s heating and refrigeration plant. This system controls and operates the chillers and boilers to optimize the Pentagon’s heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems.
