November 26, 2003—DuPont Canada has reached an agreement with Vector Wind Energy Inc. for the installation of a meteorological tower that will generate data to evaluate the use of wind turbines as a renewable energy source in Kingston. This project supports DuPonts goal to obtain 10 percent of its total energy needs from renewable sources by the year 2010.
The tower, expected to stand about 50 meters (150 feet) tall, will measure wind velocity on the Carruthers Point property. This property is part of the manufacturing site operated by the INVISTA Canada Division of DuPont Canada. These measurements will be collected over 18 months as a key part of a feasibility study regarding the possible development of a “wind turbine farm” at the site. At full production, the wind farm is expected to generate enough green energy to power 500 homes.
The Kingston site anticipates purchasing the majority of the “green energy” that would be generated by a future wind turbine farm. Up to 20 percent of the output of the wind farm may be made available to support other green energy initiatives in the Kingston area.
