May 26, 2003—High Point Furniture Industries introduces Himalaya, contemporary seating featuring relief-style upholstery, techniques fully hidden from view in the finished piece.
Himalaya “reliefs” are created through a collaboration of cutting, sewing and upholstering operations. The upholstery cover is cut and marked according to the square pattern of relief locations. A fabric “tie” is sewn to the inside of the cover at each relief location. To upholster, each tie is hand-pulled to the proper relief depth, then individually secured to a frame component.
These reliefs create a series of “peaks” and “valleys,” forming a visual comfort further enhanced with thick, loose-appearance cushions on lounge models. Decorative single-stitching draws further attention to the reliefs while other sewing operations utilize double-needle tailoring.
Himalaya was designed by David Behles and influenced by modern classic designs. All units are available in three upholstery treatments: Full Relief (seat and back); Back Relief (solid seat); and Solid (no reliefs).
