Honeywell introduces roof restoration compound for flat roofs

September 30, 2002—For flat or low-slope roofing systems that are showing the effects of premature aging due to water or exposure to environmental contaminates, Honeywell Commercial Roofing Systems has introduced its ArmorFlex roof restoration compound. A polymer-modified compound, ArmorFlex can be used on any built-up or modified bitumen membrane system. One coat of ArmorFlex over a prepared roofing membrane forms a continuous monolithic membrane that is thicker than the typical single-ply rubber or thermoplastic roofing systems, says Honeywell.

Honeywell explains that roofing asphalt is soluble in water, therefore, manufacturers of asphalt roofing systems require slope to avoid standing water. Yet many flat roofs are covered by asphalt roofing membranes.

Restoring a roof membrane before it becomes badly deteriorated adds value to a building by extending the roof’s serviceable life. Whether the roof needs preventative maintenance or the appearance needs to be freshened, Honeywell says that ArmorFlex will provide a lasting solution.

ArmorFlex utilizes the structural qualities of the existing roof membrane as a base for a new liquid-applied, flexible surfacing system. In addition to its 2,000 percent elongation property, ArmorFlex resists the deteriorating effects of ponding water and chemical attacks, which Honeywell says differentiates it from most roof coatings. One coat of ArmorFlex retards deterioration of the existing membrane and adds a new seamless water-resistant layer to the roof surface, whether the roof is smooth, granulated, or gravel-surfaced. ArmorFlex is both code and UL approved.
