October 24, 2001—Pennsylvanias Slippery Rock University has selected Tyco Electronics’ AMP Netconnect Category 6 unshielded twisted-pair (UTP) copper cabling and AMP/Pirelli fiber optic cable for the communications cabling infrastructure that will support its new network. According to Tyco, this cabling system supports not only state-of-the-art networking technologies, but is ready to support future technology, thereby helping to protect the university’s infrastructure investment. Since Tyco Electronics manufactures both the cable and connectors, it was able to offer the university a single-vendor, complete system solution, and to warrant it to meet performance standards for 25 years.
The $3.7 million project, said to be the largest design/build project of its kind in the Pennsylvania University System, completely re-vamps and expands the network serving Slippery Rock University’s academic classroom buildings, student housing, and administration buildings. The project involves pulling a total of 1.6 million feet of Category 6 cable and 80,000 feet of fiber.
The new cabling infrastructure is part of an extensive campus-wide network upgrade to a high-speed switched network. For more information, visit Slippery Rock University or AMP Netconnect.
