UKs Birmingham City Center has integrated Visionic Corp.s FaceIt technology into its CCTV system. The system automatically scans the faces of people passing in front of a camera and searches against a selection of photographs of criminals held in a database at the police control room. If there is no match, the facial images are discarded.
The system, developed by Visionics Corporation, a leader in identification technologies and its UK business partner, Dectel Security Ltd., is now being piloted by West Midlands Police as part of Operation Safer Streets, the long-term campaign to combat street crime across the region.
“Face recognition is becoming an important component of CCTV systems, automating a process that is virtually impossible for a human to perform. Visionics has led in deploying this technology for CCTV and we are pleased to be working with Dectel and West Midlands Police on this project,” said Dr. Joseph Atick, president and chief executive officer of Visionics Corporation.
This new installation has been enabled by Citywatch, a long-term partnership between local businesses, Birmingham City Council and West Midlands Police. Citywatch aims to prevent and deter criminal activity and increase feelings of personal safety amongst the local community. For more information, contact Visionics.
