Controversy Over Bill Regarding Interior Designers’ Scope of Work

American Institute of Architects (AIA) is voicing serious objections to a bill regarding areas of work by interior designers. The legislation, Assembly Bill 1096, is expected to reach the desk of California’s governor by end of August. It has already received approval from the Assembly and the Senate Business and Professions Committee and is scheduled to be heard next in the Senate Appropriations Committee early August.

AIA has carefully reviewed the bill and found it contrary to AIA Public Policy in several instances. However, after obtaining amendments to prohibit interior designers from performing work beyond the scope currently allowed by California law, the AIA California Council (AIACC) (http://www.aiacc.org) has taken a neutral position on the bill.
