Demand low for high-priced renewable energy, Cato study finds

January 28, 2002—Despite a recent Gallup Poll finding that a majority of Americans support government-subsidies for renewable energy research and development, the high price of renewable energy is keeping consumers from buying it, reports a recent study from the Cato Institute.

According to the study, only 1.5 percent of consumers in any state have signed up for renewable energy programs.

The study concluded by saying renewable energy is not likely to gain significant market share in the foreseeable future without a significant increase in government subsidies or mandates.
