DOE adopts new energy standards for commercial heating and cooling equipment

The US Department of Energy (DOE) recently adopted four new energy efficiency standards that set minimum allowable energy efficiency requirements for products to be manufactured for sale in the United States.

The new standards apply to four types of appliances: commercial heating and cooling equipment, residential central air conditioners and heat pumps, residential clothes washers and residential water heaters.

The standards are projected to save consumers and businesses more than $19 billion through the year 2030 and will alleviate the need to build ninety-one new 400-megawatt power plants. To develop the standards, the department held a series of public meetings to gather input from manufacturers, consumer groups, and energy efficiency advocates.
