DOE reaches energy assessment milestone of 100 facilities

July 14, 2006—Major US industrial manufacturers are working with the Department of Energy (DOE) to assess their facilities’ systems to identify opportunities for using energy more efficiently and thereby improve their bottom line. The free, three-day energy assessments are primarily focusing on steam and process heating systems, which reportedly consume nearly 80 percent of the energy used by US industry.

DOE Energy Saving Teams have now completed visits to 100 energy-intensive manufacturing facilities as part of a national campaign launched in October 2005, with a projected total of 200 facilities. Companies such as 3M, Alcoa, Dupont, the J. R. Simplot Company, Weyerhaeuser, and others have benefited from assessments provided by energy experts using DOE software tools and technical information.
