January 19, 2004—The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recognized NiSource recently at its Annual Meeting of Climate Leaders in Washington D.C. as a new partner in its national Climate Leaders Program. A total of 54 companies (including eight utilities) from a wide array of industries are Climate Leader partners. Partners in this program are committed to reporting greenhouse gas emissions and establishing goals that reduce greenhouse gases, which include carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane.
Projects are planned to further improve infrastructure integrity and also to commit to the emissions-reductions initiatives of the Natural Gas STAR Program, a voluntary partnership between the EPA and NiSource. On the electric side of NiSource’s business, projects are planned to improve heat rate and efficiency as well as to use alternative fuels in power generation.
NiSource participates in the Natural Gas STAR Program, which encourages voluntary reductions in the emissions of methane to the atmosphere by natural gas distribution, transmission and production companies—and companies’ promotion and involvement in STAR Program activities. The EPA has recognized NiSource subsidiaries as being among the best participants. Most recently, in 2002, Columbia Gas Transmission Company and Columbia Gulf Transmission Company received Continuing Excellence Awards. Prior to that, the EPA recognized Columbia Gas Transmission Company as the transmission company “Partner of the Year” in 2001 and 2000 and Bay State Gas Company as distribution company “Partner of the Year” in 2000.
