Ergonomic design principles improve efficiency in MegaStars storage systems

November 14, 2001—Utilizing the Principles of Universal Design has helped MegaStar Systems develop automated storage and retrieval systems to provide improved office filing safety and productivity.

The Principles of Universal Design, compiled by the Center for Universal Design at North Carolina State University, require products and environments to be usable by all people, without the need for adaptation or specialized design. The principles seek to foster product and system designs that are useful to people with diverse abilities, accommodate a wide range of individual preferences and abilities, facilitate accuracy and precision, and provide adaptability to the user’s pace.

For example, the MediaStationT Electric Lateral File from MegaStar Systems is an automated filing system to meet the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) legislation for records management applications.

The MediaStation Electric Lateral File consists of a series of vertically arranged rotating carriers controlled by an electronic keypad. Files and records are delivered to the operator at an ergonomically efficient platform. Each unit can provide more than 2,700 linear file inches of letter-sized filing space, equivalent to approximately 27 file cabinets depending on the available ceiling height.

The ergonomic design and operation of the Electric Lateral Filing system is fully compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and OSHA regulations regarding reach and manipulation requirements to all operable parts. It is also fully compliant with the Uniform Federal Accessibility Standards (UFAS) for forward and side reach, clearance under the work counter, and control accessibility guidelines. The rollout file drawer can be accessed with no more than five pounds of force, and the ADA fixed seating posting board allows easy, natural access to retrieved materials.
