May 17, 2002—FuelCell Energy Inc. and PPL Energy Plus are partnering to provide two Direct FuelCell power plants for installation at New Jersey hotels owned by Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc., one of the largest hotel operators of the world.
The two plants will generate 250 kilowatts of power at the Sheraton Parsippany Hotel and Sheraton Edison Raritan Center. They are expected to be used in a combined heat and power application, providing about 25 percent of the power needs and 25 percent of the domestic hot water needs for each of the hotels.
Direct FuelCells generate electricity with no combustion. They are like large, continuously operating batteries that generate electricity as long as fuel, such as natural gas, is supplied. Since the fuel is not burned, there is no pollution commonly associated with the combustion of fossil fuels. The high efficiency leads to more electric power from less fuel.
The New Jersey Clean Energy Program will be providing approximately $1.7 million to support the projects.
