US State Department is actively promoting the establishment of a Global Disaster Information Network (GDIN). The purpose of the Network is to supply information and resources to those in need in a timely fashion. A conference recently held was attended by 40 nations, with participants also from departments of the government, industry representatives, academic experts, and disaster/relief management personnel from the UN and Red Cross. As reported by AIA, GDIN will “seek ways to share disaster prevention, planning response and mitigation programs, and expertise through digital formats.” In addition, opportunities to foster early warning systems and mitigation of best practice measures will also be pursued. AIA states that GDIN is a voluntary, self-sustaining, nonprofit alliance composed of nations, organizations and professionals eager to share disaster information.
