Interior design exemption passes Colorado legislature

Recently, the Colorado Senate and House passed legislation to exempt interior designers from the state of Colorado’s architectural practice act. If signed by the governor, the legislation would grant interior designers the authority to prepare and submit building plans for “interior finishes and nonstructural elements within and surrounding interior spaces of any size, height, and occupancy.”

The original bill was amended to prevent interior designers from working on areas that impact life safety. Currently, Colorado interior designers can prepare and file permits for buildings of any size, height, or occupancy as long as their design does not have an impact on public safety.
