Look for increase in total turnkey services, survey predicts

With outsourcing on the increase, Buildings magazine conducted a survey of commercial building development and management companies to see their view of the future of outsourcing. Respondents generally showed increases, from outsourcing in general to a growth in total facility management services. Most respondents—68%—say their firms offer total FM outsourcing service. As a “turnkey” service, it is a fairly recent development, according to 54%. And it apparently will continue to grow. Forty-five percent of respondents predict substantial increases in outsourcing. Thirty-seven percent expect a moderate increase during the next two to four years. Fourteen percent see no increase in outsourcing services. On the negative but minor side, 2% see a substantial decrease and another 2% see a moderate decrease.

In addition to the 68% offering “turnkey” FM services, the survey shows growth in other areas. Within the past three to five years, 66% are offering design/construction outsourcing services. Other services added to the new roster are real estate brokerage (53%), space and planning design (36%), office relocation (34%), and engineering/energy management (28%), environmental services (21%), and data center management (4%).
