February 3, 2006—Limileds Lighting has released its LUXEON K2 LEDs that has advances in light output, temperature tolerance, and drive current. LUXEON K2 Emitters enable the development of solid-state lighting applications with more useable light, reduced thermal management engineering, lower cost, and simpler manufacturing.
“With LUXEON K2 we start a new chapter for solid-state lighting by simultaneously increasing the brightness threshold and simplifying the engineering required to use high-power LEDs,” says David Eastley, Lumileds product manager for the LUXEON K2 line.
Lumileds cites key benefits of the LUXEON K2 LEDs:
- The world’s best LED light output with 140 or more lumens in white, outstripping the performance of other power LEDs by 15 to 30% and significantly lowering the cost per lumen.
- The industry’s highest maximum junction temperature at 185C, allowing engineers to deliver more light in current applications with existing thermal designs by driving LEDs at higher currents. This can reduce or even eliminate heat sink requirements, thereby lowering the cost of system thermal design.
- The market’s highest allowable drive current at 1500mA and lowest thermal resistance at 9 degrees C/W, further reducing the cost per lumen by delivering more light from the same package.
- The industry’s best moisture tolerance with a JEDEC Level 2a rating, allowing for four weeks of unsealed factory floor life prior to preconditioning. Other products are JEDEC Level 4 at best, leaving only a 72-hour production window after removal from their sealed production packaging.
LUXEON K2 LEDs are rated for light output and drive current resulting in two series of part numbers. Complete details are available in the LUXEON K2 Datasheet.
