September 17, 2001—According to a recent survey published by the Network of Employers for Traffic Safety (NETS), 39 percent of respondents engage in distracting activities while driving for work. Additional research shows that 40 percent of all employees will be impacted by a traffic crash experienced by themselves, a family member, or a close friend over the course of a year. As a result, these employees will lose an average of 5.3 hours of work time in dealing with the aftermath. The cost to US employers is $53 billion annually.
The survey also confirmed reports from other studies that show distracted driving is becoming an increasingly dangerous trend. Ninety-four percent of survey respondents indicated doing something distracting while driving and 90 percent reported talking with passengers as the number one distracting activity.
The US Department of Transportation estimates that driver distraction is a factor in 25 to 50 percent of all crashes.
NETS has targeted distracted driving and safety belt use as part of its fifth annual Drive Safely Work Week Campaign (DSWW), September 10-14. Using the theme, “Pay attention. Safe Driving is a Full Time Job,” this campaign emphasizes the need for employers to take a more proactive approach and implement workplace traffic safety programs for all employees.
The survey indicates that many of the distracting activities are work-related, including reviewing notes, talking on the phone, making lists, or using a computer. Employers should discourage this kind of multitasking, NETS says.
As part of the DSWW campaign, NETS recommends these “Get Your Car In Order” tips to help employees manage distractions safely:
- Pre-program favorite radio stations.
- Pre-load selected CD(s) or tapes.
- Clear the vehicle of unnecessary objects.
- Check to see that all cargo is properly secured.
- Pre-program cell phones with commonly called numbers.
- Be familiar with all safety and usage features on any in-vehicle electronics.
- Pull all safety belts out from between the seats so they’re ready for use by passengers.
- Set mirrors for best all-around visibility.
