NeoCon’08: Herman Miller’s Teneo storage wins Best of NeoCon’s highest award

June 13, 2008—Teneo, the Herman Miller filing and storage system, won both a Gold award in the Filing and Storage category, and emerged overall winner in The Best of NeoCon’08 Product Competition.

The Teneo storage system is ideal for group spaces—casters make everything easy to move so people can have access to whatever they need. It is also excellent for hoteling. And all surfaces can be removed and/or replaced by one with a different finish, making it ideal for integrating it with other furniture lines and finishes/materials.

Herman Miller describes its winning Teneo filing and storage system as bringing variety and visual harmony to the workplace. Teneo was designed to provide and maintain a consistent esthetic within open work environments while creating a unified, yet flexible space, says the company.

Designers Birsel + Seck comment that storage tends to be a metal box or a wood case—nothing in between. Teneo, they add, “represents a new paradigm in storage. It’s an active partner in the places where people gather and collaborate.”

The designers identified three core elements of storage: structure, utility, and cladding. They determined these could become modular components, assembled to create a variety of products that may be applied in the office, higher education, home, and healthcare.

Teneo has a new shape and structure using anodized aluminum rings of four heights. Teneo products were designed to be viewed from all sides in open environments. The rings support utility elements, such as drawers, shelves, work surfaces, and cladding.

The core products include single islands, side-by-side islands, presentation units, wall units, individual storage and surfaces. The systemic concept allows products to be restructured, yet remain consistent with surrounding design elements.

The Teneo products are available in a range of colors, veneers and customizable finishes. Door and drawer fronts are defined by an integrated, graceful curve to be used as a handle or pull, in painted metal or veneer.

The Best of NeoCon Product Competition, a highlight of the annual NeoCon World’s Fair held each June at The Merchandise Mart, Chicago, is sponsored by Contract Magazine, Merchandise Mart Properties, Inc., The International Facility Association (IFMA), The International Interior Design Association (IIDA), and McMorrow Report.com.
