NIOSH guide addresses medical screening for workers in demanding environments

November 4, 2005—When employees work in physically demanding, unclean or unstable work environments such as hurricane recovery areas, employers need to ensure those work conditions don’t create adverse health conditions. That’s the advice NIOSH gives in an interim guidance released in October.

One way to do that is to set up a medical screening program to determine the extent to which individual workers have been negatively affected by their work and to identify as early as possible any workers needing preventative measures or medical care.

The NIOSH document explains how to determine a need for a screening, who to screen, what type of screening to use, when to screen, and what information needs to be collected from workers.
