The National Safety Council strongly advises employers to institute off-the-job safety training programs for their employees during Workplace Safety Week, June 24-30. Injuries in the workplace cost the nation $122.6 billion in 1999, but “the true cost to the nation, to employers and to families from accidental deaths and injuries [off-the-job] was a staggering $469 billion in 1999,” said Alan McMillan, Council president. While approximately 5,100 people died in 1999 from workplace injuries, an estimated 40,600 workers were killed in the home and community.
