November 3, 2008—The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published a quarterly update October 27 of its rankings of the Top 20 College & University green power purchasers among EPA Green Power Partners. The quarterly list, highlighted below, ranks the leading purchasers of green power as of April 8. With the current update, EPA expanded its College & University list from the Top 10 to the Top 20.
Much of the top ten remained the same from last quarter, but the University of Phoenix moved up into 7th place while the City University of New York moved down to 12th. The first ten of the Top 20 College & University Green Power Partners are:
- University of Pennsylvania, PA (Ivy League) 192,727,000 kWh/year; 47% of total electricity use
- New York University, NY (University Athletic Assoc.) 132,000,000; 100%
- Pennsylvania State University, PA (Big Ten Conf.) 83,600,000; 20%
- Oregon State University, OR (Pacific-10 Conf.) 66,680,400; 74%
- California State University System (Numerous) 66,189,000; 9%
- University of CA, Santa Cruz (Assoc. of Div. III Independents): 57,000,000; 100%
- University of Phoenix: 46,500,000; 27%
- Texas A&M University System (Numerous): 43,350,000; 15%
- (tie) Northwestern University (Big 10): 40,000,000; 20%
(tie) Western Washington Univ. (Great NW Athletic Conf.—GNAC): 40,000,000; 100%
