President Bush signs executive order for standby power devices

August 13, 2001—President George W. Bush has ordered the US Department of Energy to compile a list of electronic devices that use only one watt or less while operating in “standby” (not turned on) mode. All federal agencies will be required to buy products from this list unless doing so would not be cost-effective or practical. If such products are not available, agencies must purchase products with the lowest standby power wattage while in their standby power-consuming mode.

The list will be compiled by Dec. 31, 2001, in consultation with the Department of Defense and the General Services Administration. Independent agencies are encouraged to comply with the provisions of this order. For more information, contact DOE.
