August 6, 2004—Sarnafil, a manufacturer of thermoplastic roofing and waterproofing systems, announces its participation in the renovation of the Stadium of Peace and Friendship, the volleyball venue for the 2004 Olympic Games. Two years ago, Sarnafil roof membrane was selected to protect the Salt Lake City Olympic Oval Speed Skating Arena.
Sarnafil’s 2004 Olympic project is located in the Faliro Coastal Zone Olympic Complex, about 25 km from the Olympic Village and south of Athens, the site for volleyball, beach volleyball, taekwondo, and handball competitions.
The renovated Stadium of Peace and Friendship, long a familiar venue for international competitions, now sports a concave Sarnafil roof to protect some 14,000 spectators and players from the extreme Athens summer sun. The stadium will be an architectural eye-catcher at the Games, which begin in mid-August. The concave roof is supported solely by pillars at its perimeter, giving television viewers and spectators alike an unobstructed view of the action.
Sarnafil-trained technicians passed on their expertise to the authorized roofing installers at the stadium, a step that played a crucial role in completion of the enormous installation, as large as two soccer fields.
