November 14, 2005—Scientific Certification Systems (SCS) has expanded its indoor air quality certification program to include both Indoor Advantage and Indoor Advantage Gold, according to SCS, an internationally recognized independent certifier of environmental and food safety claims.
Indoor Advantage meets USGBC LEED criteria for EQ4.5, EQ4.1, and EQ4.2. Indoor Advantage Gold conforms to LEED criteria, as well as standards for California 013350 and the Collaborative for High Performance Schools.
Indoor Advantage certifications cover a broad array of nonfloor interior building products: wall coverings, ceiling tiles, furniture, casework, and insulation. Indoor Advantage certifications rely on data collected through small chamber testing, which allows manufacturers to examine a product’s individual components and involve the supply chain in improving product performance.
The Indoor Advantage Gold program has the added benefit of being health-driven; it is based on Chronic Reference Exposure Levels (CRELs) set by the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment, rather than Total VOCs and Threshold Limit Values. A CREL is an airborne concentration level that would pose no significant health risk to individuals indefinitely exposed to that level.
