January 23, 2008—TerraPass has launched a tool that will help businesses size up the carbon emissions associated with their operations. Called the Carbon Balanced Business Program, it is essentially an online carbon calculator that takes into account five areas that typically inflate a company’s carbon footprint. Businesses usually generate carbon emissions through on-site energy use, off-site server energy use, company vehicles, business travel, and employee commuting.
The tool was designed to be quick and easy, and displays the emissions from each category in an accompanying bar chart. The emissions calculations are based on the World Resources Institute Greenhouse Gas Protocol, says TerraPass.
TerraPass, a company that specializes in carbon offsets, already offers a similar calculator for homes, air and road travel. For the business calculator, it teamed with several companies that that have taken measure to improve their own sustainable business practices.
“It is important that businesses show real leadership in being environmentally responsible by implementing comprehensive and long-term sustainability practices,” said Butterfield & Robinson CEO Benson Cowan in a statement. “For Butterfield & Robinson, this means understanding and measuring our footprint, committing to working hard to reduce consumption, and looking for meaningful methods to address what can’t be reduced now.”
