Select Energy announces wind-power alliance with Community Energy

April 16, 2004—Select Energy has formed a strategic alliance with Community Energy Inc., a marketer and developer of emission-free NewWind Energy. As a result of the agreement, business electric customers in upstate New York can secure environmentally friendly power as part of their overall power supply.

Select Energy’s regional office in Syracuse, New York, is offering NewWind Energy to its customers in addition to electricity and natural gas.

Select Energy offers customers volume-discount pricing according to the amount and length of their wind power contracts. Select’s current marketing efforts are focused initially on Niagara Mohawk’s customer territory; however, customers throughout New York State can now purchase wind power from Select Energy. Plans are in development to make wind power available to other businesses and institutions throughout the northeastern U.S.

Select Energy and Community Energy currently provide NewWind Energy to the U.S. General Services Administration at the Binghamton (NY) Federal Building, the first federal site to be powered entirely by wind-generated electricity. Compared to the average generation mix in New York’s wholesale electric spot market, the Binghamton Federal Building’s wind purchase is estimated to offset annually approximately 772,000 pounds of carbon dioxide.

The estimated emission reductions are equivalent to planting over 52,000 trees.
