Green rating systems mandated for new municipal buildings worldwide

July 20, 2005—All new municipal buildings in the world’s largest cities, including Melbourne, London, Moscow, and Delhi, will be subject to green building rating systems by 2012 as part of a range of environmental commitments by the cities’ mayors, according to the World Green Building Council.

Mayors representing fifty of the world’s largest cities signed up to “adopt a policy that mandates a green building rating system standard that applies to all new municipal buildings” by 2012 as part of landmark Urban Environmental Accords signed at the recent United Nations’ official World Environment Day (WED) event.

The accords commit the cities to taking 21 environmental actions towards environmental sustainability by 2012 in seven key environmental areas ranging from waste reduction to public transport.
