July 25, 2003—The GREENGUARD Environmental Institute (GEI) has awarded GREENGUARD Certification to the Benjamin Moore’s Eco Spec line of paint products. To earn certification, the paints underwent a series of emissions tests for levels of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). It is these compounds that contribute to the creation of smog, which leads to the depletion of the ozone layer. Additionally, when released in closed, non-ventilated spaces, these emissions can cause irritation to the respiratory tract.
GREENGUARD certifies that Eco Spec paints are low emitting and have minimal impact on indoor air quality. Benjamin Moore’s certified paints will undergo quarterly monitoring tests to provide ongoing assurance of their low emitting status. The products meet the GREENGUARD Indoor Air Quality standards, which are based on proven requirements used by the State of Washington and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
“When it comes to indoor air quality, the contents of a product are less important than its emissions,” said Henning Bloech, GREENGUARD’s Director of Communications.”
Many products and materials release odorous or potentially irritating contaminants into the indoor environment, any of which can affect a person’s health, especially those with sensitivities. GREENGUARD Certified Products significantly reduce indoor air pollution.
