BSRIA: Global building energy management systems market to nearly double by 2020

by Brianna Crandall — January 12, 2015—Nonprofit building research and consultancy organization BSRIA (owned by The Building Services Research and Information Association) recently published its updated Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS) Opportunities report. The BEMS market is currently worth some $3.5 billion, or 3 billion euros globally, and is growing at well over 10 percent per year.

The market report indicates that Europe, which currently accounts for almost half the current BEMS market, is growing at around 10 percent, while North America has been growing at a faster rate, and the rest of the world much faster still.

BSRIA forecasts that the global BEMS market will almost double by the year 2020, to more than $6.8 billion. This impressive growth is said to be expected in spite of numerous obstacles and uncertainties, partly because the factors driving this growth differ from one region to another.

The key drivers include European recession-forced efficiency efforts to save money while meeting obligations and improving the brand; office buildings being targeted for energy savings in North America, accompanied by innovative energy management solutions; and the focus to reduce pollution associated with fossil fuels in China.
