Collins & Aikman Honored for Environmental Sustainability Practices

The Council on Economic Priorities (CEP) has named Collins & Aikman Floorcoverings one of six winners in the 14th annual national Corporate Conscience Awards program. The Dalton, Georgia, company received the award in the category of Environmental Stewardship and is the first floorcovrings company to receive this prestigious Corporate Conscience Award. CEP honors “those corporations that demonstrate social accountability through innovative programs and policies, and draw attention to those companies as developers of best practices worthy of replication by other companies.”

Collins & Aikman was recognized for its success in integrating progressive and social environmental policies into its core business strategy, as well as for specific achievements in the following areas:

  • Pioneering the first and only closed-loop carpet recycling system (holding three patents) where new commercial carpet, ER3®, is made from old. CEP noted, “This achievement demonstrates that the ideal of closed-loop recycling is both attainable and profitable without sacrificing product longevity or quality.”
  • Developing the first and only “take-back” program where customers return their old carpet of similar composition (regardless of the original manufacturer) for recycling to Collins & Aikman. As a result, millions of pounds of discarded carpet have been diverted from landfills; significant savings of virgin raw materials had been made.
  • Creating the industry’s first “dry” adhesive installation system, which essentially eliminates volatile organic compounds (VPC) emissions.
Other recipients of the 14th annual Corporate Conscience Awards were Bristol-Meyers Squibb, Global Ethics Award; Carris Reels, Employee Empowerment Award; and Denny’s, Diversity Award. Horizon Organic Holding Corp. and Ricoh Corp. also received Environmental Stewardship Awards.
