IslandWood school becomes first Washington project to receive USGBC LEED Gold

March 19, 2003—IslandWood became Gold certified under the USGBC’s Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System. IslandWood: A School in the Woods is the first project in the state of Washington to receive rating certification from the US Green Building Council. The 55,000 sq. ft. learning facility located on Bainbridge Island, WA, submitted their application for three primary buildings on their campus—the Main Center, Dining Hall, and Learning Studios.

Each of the three buildings incorporated varying green features such as:

  • Photovoltaic-powered fans used for room ventilation in the Dining Hall;
  • Reclaimed water re-used for flushing toilets and subsurface landscape irrigation water;
  • Natural ventilation to replace air conditioning;
  • Trees that were cleared during siting of the facility were dried, milled, and used in the exterior siding, interior trim, and structure of the buildings.
