June 20, 2007—The Akira flip-top table by Vecta, which was a rare double winner in The Best of NeoCon competition, was designed to be “the easiest table to fold, move, reconfigure,” according to the company. Akira won Gold in the Training Table category and Silver in the Education Solutions category.

Akira’s patent-pending folding mechanism and one-handed release lever make it easy to set up, adjust, take down, and store, says Vecta. One person can easily arrange or reconfigure a room in a matter of minutes, according to the company.

Akira can be configured in a wide variety of arrangements due to its diverse sizes and shapes, including rectangle, half-round, and trapezoid, and also leg positionsT-base and L-base. Rectangular T-base tables allow for seating on all four sides of the table, while L-base tables provide maximum clearance and legroom for those seated on one side, such as in seminar settings.

Akira can be stored compactly or “nested.” Through one controlled hand motion, using a dual-cam mechanism, Akira’s top flips, its legs rotate, and the table lifts to its nesting position. Once the legs are rotated inward, they lock automatically and can be nested a straight stack, minimizing the required storage space.

The Akira was introduced during NeoCon World’s Trade Fair held annually at The Merchandise Mart, Chicago in June.

Designed by Christian Cornelius for Vecta, a Steelcase company, Akira is composed of aluminum, of which 83 percent is recycled content, and is 87 percent recyclable at the end of its useful life.
