New environmental performance indicators developed for UK construction industry

August 1, 2001—The UKs Movement for Innovation’s Sustainability Working Group launched environmental performance indicators (EPIs) in an effort to promote more sustainable working practices in the UK construction industry. The EPIs set clear benchmarks for meeting environmental sustainability targets and will ultimately form part of a wider sustainability headline indicator.

Six environmental issues have been identified by the Sustainability Working Group as the basis for the suite of EPIs:

  • Operational Energy (measured as carbon dioxide emissions)
  • Embodied Energy (measured as carbon dioxide emissions)
  • Operational Water Consumption
  • Waste (in the construction process)
  • Construction transport
  • Biodiversity

An EPI toolkit will eventually be available on The Movement for Innovation’s Web site. Construction contractors, architects, designers, developers and suppliers are now being urged to visit the site to find out how they can improve their environmental performance through simple changes to everyday working practices.
