Philips adds lighting to portfolio through acquisitions, introductions

November 12, 2007—Royal Philips Electronics (Philips) is acquiring Lighting Technologies International, a US manufacturer of high-power xenon lamps for the entertainment industry; and is introducing two new lights: ALTO II and StumbleLight.

Founded in 1999, LTI has quickly grown to become a leading supplier of cinema projection lighting in the United States, which can be traced in part to its high-power Helios xenon lamps, for which the company has filed patents. The energy-efficient design of the Helios xenon lamp provides the same illumination as competing high-power lamps, but has 30% lower operating costs due to its lower energy consumption.

The company has also introduced ALTO II, its next-generation low-mercury fluorescent lamp technology for the professional lighting market.

Twelve years ago, Philips Lighting introduced its original ALTO technology, which reduced the amount of mercury in its T8 fluorescent lamps to an industry low of 3.5 mg. The new ALTO II T8 lamps now contain only 1.7 mg of mercury, an unprecedented 50 percent reduction from previous levels, says the company.

Now incorporated into a variety of 32-Watt Philips T8 lamps, lamps with ALTO II technology will continue to deliver the same high performance as the previous generation of ALTO lamps.

The company’s StumbleLight is a motion-activated night guiding light designed to turn on when a hotel guest steps out of bed. Ideal for placement under a hotel room nightstand or on a wall to illuminate the path at night, StumbleLight lights the way through a room or to a bathroom using a warm white LED light source. The 55-65 lumens of light output delivered by StumbleLight, comparable to the light output of traditional incandescent night light technology, is an optimal amount to sufficiently light a hotel guest’s way without bright overhead lights, says the company.
