Schwab Rehab Hospital opens new greenroof technology for patient therapy

September 10, 2003—Schwab Rehabilitation Hospital, in Chicago, has opened its new therapeutic rooftop garden. The garden on the Schwab rooftop, 1401 S. California, was developed with a grant from the Chicago Department of Environment, funded through Commonwealth Edison. Complete with waterfall and stream, the garden incorporates the latest “greenroof” technology to improve air quality and energy efficiency, at the same time providing Schwab patients with new opportunities for therapy.

Physical therapy patients will practice walking or pushing their wheelchairs, and occupational therapy patients will garden to improve upper arm and hand strength. Speech therapists will use the garden to improve memory skills and psychologists will use the garden as a calming therapeutic environment for group therapy. Recreational therapists will offer horticulture therapy in all seasons.

Schwab Rehabilitation Hospital, the first accredited rehabilitation hospital in the Midwest, is anchored by a 125-bed hospital in the Lawndale community and provides comprehensive rehabilitation care for people of all ages. Schwab is a member of the Sinai Health System and an academic affiliate of the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine.
